The oldest housing in Swinton and neighbouring Pendlebury is its period terraces, dating from the years when the town grew around its collieries and cotton mills. Roofs of that age are typically slate, with brick chimney stacks and lead flashing that have been in place for a very long time.
Much of the rest of the town came later. Swinton and Pendlebury became a borough in 1934, the same year the East Lancashire Road opened along its southern edge, and 1930s semis are a familiar sight across the town, alongside post-war and modern developments. Homes from those years generally have tiled roofs, mortar-bedded ridges and timber roofline. We work on all of them.
We are based at 465a Chorley Road in Swinton, so Pendlebury, Clifton, Wardley, Worsley and Eccles are all a short drive.

Swinton grew from a colliery and mill town into a suburb of period terraces, 1930s semis and newer estates, and each kind of house tends to have its own roof faults. These are the jobs our roofers are called to most often across Swinton, Pendlebury, Clifton, Wardley and Moorside.
The period terraces in Swinton and Pendlebury were typically roofed in slate more than a century ago. The slate itself often has years left in it, but the nails holding it rust away, so single slates slide down or drop out. In most cases they can be re-fixed or replaced without stripping the roof. See our slate roofing.
Chimney stacks on the older houses in Swinton stand clear of the roof and catch the weather from every side. Pointing washes out and the lead at the base of the stack works loose, and the leak shows up as a stain on the chimney breast or a bedroom ceiling. See our chimney repairs and lead flashing repairs.
The tiled roofs on the 1930s semis and post-war houses in Swinton had their ridge tiles and roof edges bedded in mortar. Years of frost and rain break that mortar down, leaving gaps along the verge and ridge tiles that can shift in a high wind. See our ridge tile repairs and dry verge systems.
Many semis and terraces in Swinton have a front bay with its own small roof, covered in lead, felt or tiles. When that covering cracks or the seal against the house wall fails, water marks appear on the ceiling or plaster just inside the bay. See our bay window roof repairs.
Garage roofs, rear extensions and dormers across Swinton and Pendlebury are often still covered in older felt that has blistered, cracked or started to hold water. Some need only a local repair; others are better re-covered. See our flat roofing.
Gutters fill with moss off the roof and leaves from nearby trees each autumn. When they overflow, the water soaks the timber fascias and soffits behind them, and after a few winters the boards soften and the gutter brackets pull loose. See our gutter repairs and gutter cleaning.
